What you're in for

Wind Sports Center has been running windsurfing, wingfoil, surfing & kitesurfing lessons in Lagos, Algarve, since 2000, the first kite school to set up on this stretch of Portugal’s southern coast. Our headquarters sits right on Meia Praia, a five-kilometre strip of sand just outside Lagos, in the far south of Portugal. The thermal northwest wind, the Nortada, arrives reliably each summer and keeps blowing long after other European destinations have gone quiet.

At a glance:

  • We are an IKO and VDWS-certified school based at Meia Praia, Lagos, Algarve
  • Kitesurfing lessons and wingfoil lessons for all levels, beginner to advanced; max 4 students per instructor in group sessions
  • Communication headphones (BB Talkin) included in all lesson packs; rescue boat on the water at all times
  • Equipment: Cabrinha kites, kite boards, hydrofoil boards, wings, harnesses, wetsuits, helmets, and impact vests
  • Wind: Nortada thermal NW wind, June to August strongest at 15-30 knots; good conditions April to October
  • Certified instructors speaking multiple languages
  • Surf camp accommodation at Meia Praia Beach House: dorms, twins, en-suites, and apartments, 300 m from the centre
  • On-site: equipment shop (10% discount for guests), storage facility, guided tours, and downwinds

About our spot in the Algarve

We teach at two spots depending on the discipline and your level. Our kitesurfing lessons and wingfoil lessons take place at the Alvor Lagoon, a natural reserve at Lagoa de Alvor in Vale da Lama, about five kilometres from our main station. The lagoon sits behind fixed dunes, sheltered from the open Atlantic. At mid-tide it gives you flat water at waist depth on a sandy bottom, which is exactly the kind of place you want when you’re learning to kite or fly for the first time. Advanced foiling sessions move to higher tide with boat support, opening up more of the lagoon’s length.

Meia Praia itself is a long, exposed beach with offshore wind from the afternoon onwards. At five kilometres you have plenty of room to run downwind, and it’s where intermediate and advanced riders tend to end up once they’ve sorted out their upwind game. For surf and SUP, we head to the west coast. Costa Vicentina is about 25 kilometres from our centre and catches Atlantic swell year-round. The waves are consistent and the landscape is raw: preserved nature with a wild, windblown character very different from the sheltered lagoon.

Our kitesurfing season in the Algarve

The Algarve is open all year, but the sweet spot for kite sessions is April through October. June, July, and August are peak wind months when the Nortada builds through the morning and reaches 15-30 knots in the afternoon. In a good week you can count on six or seven wind days. April, May, September, and October bring a mix of Nortada, southeast, and southwest winds, still reliable, and often less crowded on the beach. Air temperatures in summer are warm, water sits around 20°C in peak season, and 300 days of sunshine a year means rain rarely cancels a session.

Kitesurfing lessons we provide

Our kitesurfing lessons follow IKO methodology from Level 1 right through to advanced riding. Beginners start on land with kite control and safety, move into body-dragging in the water, then progress to board work and first water starts. By the end of a five-day course, most students are riding. Group lessons run with a maximum of 4 students sharing 2 kites. Semi-private sessions put 2 students on a dedicated kite each. Private lessons are one-on-one. All packs include kite, board, harness, wetsuit, helmet, neoprene booties, and impact vest. BB Talkin radios keep you connected to the instructor throughout the session. After completing a course, you can sit the IKO or VDWS certification exam. The VDWS card is recognised at kite schools worldwide.

We also run supervision sessions for riders who can already kite but want experienced eyes on them at an unfamiliar kite spot. For kids, we adapt equipment and teaching pace to the child, minimum weight around 30 kg.

Wingfoil lessons follow the same format: group, semi-private, or private, across four progressive levels from first flight to upwind riding and early board turns. Sessions start from 10 knots, making wingfoiling a practical option even on lighter days.

Our equipment

We run Cabrinha kites and wingfoil gear, refreshed regularly. Boards cover twin-tip and surfboard shapes for kitesurfing, with foil boards for wingfoiling and kite foiling. Every rental kit includes a Dakine harness and accessories. Guests can also store their own gear at the centre. If you want to buy new kit, our shop stocks it, and all lesson students get a 10% discount in-store.

Our camps

The Algarve surf camp is based at our Beach House at Meia Praia, a few metres back from the sand. Rooms range from dorm bunks to en-suite twin rooms and private apartments. A kite camp week includes seven nights, five days of lessons, breakfast and dinner, daily cleaning, and transport to the beach. Camp food is built around the Algarve’s strengths: fresh fish, seafood, and traditional Portuguese cooking. After sessions, Lagos is a short walk away, with good restaurants, a live bar scene, and a marina worth seeing at sunset.

If you want wind through the colder European months, check out our other location Boa Vista location in Cape Verde, where the wind runs from November to April. The two destinations run as one operation: different continents, same team, and the same level of care in the water.

I had a really positive experience renting kite gear here. The equipment was one of the highlights: they had the latest Flysurfer gear (2026 models), everything was in excellent condition, and it performed perfectly on the water. After seeing my riding level, they trusted me to rent equipment independently, which I really appreciated. The team knows the lagoon and the surrounding area extremely well. They explained the spot thoroughly, showed me the best launch areas, and even pointed out the section where more advanced riders can practice without interfering with beginners or other kiters. Their local knowledge is outstanding and definitely adds a lot of value. The owner may seem a bit reserved at first, but once you start talking to him, it’s obvious how much experience he has. He was one of the pioneers of watersports schools in the area, and his passion and expertise really show. Overall, the whole team was friendly and helpful. If I could suggest one area for improvement, it would be communication and a few organizational details. The gear handover took a little longer than expected, and it would have been helpful to know in advance that arriving by car is the easiest option. That said, I only rented equipment and didn’t book lessons, so I wasn’t expecting a full-service experience. Overall, I’d happily recommend this center, especially if you’re looking for high-quality equipment, excellent local knowledge, and a team that genuinely knows the lagoon inside out.

Our two kids (8 and 11) had surf lessons today with Eric. He took us off to a super amazing beach with perfect waves for a first lesson. He was patient with the kids, very knowledgable and extremely friendly. He had them both up on the board very quickly riding waves! They LOVED it.

Avoid this company at all costs. I booked a two-day surf course and not a single lesson took place. On the first day, I waited at the meeting point for over 30 minutes before anyone finally responded to my calls and informed me that the lesson had been cancelled. No one had bothered to notify me in advance, so I had made the trip for nothing. I remained patient and specifically asked to be informed before coming the next day if there were not enough participants or if conditions were unsuitable. Despite following up, I received no information whatsoever. I went to the meeting point again, waited while the staff spent more than 20 minutes checking the surf conditions, and was then told that the lesson was cancelled once again. I was the only participant who had shown up. The most unacceptable part is what happened afterwards. I was promised a full refund within one week. That was over a month ago. Despite multiple reminders and repeated assurances that the refund was being processed, I have still not received my money. Communication eventually stopped altogether. This is not just poor organisation and terrible customer service—it is completely unacceptable to keep a customer’s money for more than a month after failing to provide the booked service. Based on my experience, this company is unreliable, unprofessional, and cannot be trusted to handle bookings or refunds properly. I would strongly recommend booking your surf lessons elsewhere.

I rented windsurfing equipment several times during our stay in Lagos. The equipment consists of new WE ONE boards and new Duontone sails with carbon booms. It couldn't be better. Everyone is super friendly and welcoming. The rental shop is located right on the beach. The bay is perfect for windsurfing when the wind is offshore. Everything was perfect!

Friendly Staff, good Windsurf material For beginners and those who want to learn basics of Jibe and Waterstart, the surf sessions on the lagoon are useful, however when we were there, wind conditions have been instable, wind picking up in late afternoon only
