What you're in for

Tarifa Max has been offering kitesurfing lessons in Tarifa since 1998, making it one of the first kite schools in the area. Our school operates from two locations: the Rip Curl shop on Calle Batalla del Salado in town, and directly on Los Lances Norte beach when the wind is up. Tarifa sits at Europe’s southernmost tip, where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean and Morocco sits just 14 kilometres across the strait.

At a glance:

  • We are an IKO and FAV-certified school in Tarifa, open March to November
  • Kitesurfing lessons for all levels — beginner, intermediate, and advanced — group courses max 4 students per instructor; private, semi-private, and half-private options also available
  • Safety equipment: radio communication helmets, lifejackets, and a rescue boat service in collaboration with New Angels
  • Wind: 300+ windy days per year; two main winds — Levante (easterly, 18–35 knots, side-offshore, flat water) and Poniente (westerly, 12–25 knots, side-on, stable and suitable for beginners)
  • Instructors are IKO and FAV certified, speaking French, Italian, English, Spanish, and Arabic
  • In-town presence at the Rip Curl shop; on the beach at Los Lances Norte Nº1 when conditions are good

About our spot in Tarifa

Los Lances is a long sandy beach on the Atlantic side of Tarifa, stretching north from town toward Punta Paloma. From June to September we teach at Los Lances Norte — the Rio Jara, Agua, and Arte Vida sections — where kiting is permitted during the summer season. Outside of summer, the entire beach opens up.
The water is relatively shallow and sandy, which makes it a good learning environment. Conditions vary a lot depending on the wind. With the Poniente — the westerly Atlantic breeze — the water stays calm and manageable, especially in summer. The Levante, blowing from the east, kicks up occasional chop or small waves between 50 cm and 2 m on stronger days. It also blows side-offshore, so we always run a rescue boat cover on Levante days.
When the wind picks up past 10 knots, you’ll find us at Los Lances Norte next to chiringuito Agua. Look for our van and flag.

Our kitesurfing season in Tarifa

Tarifa gets more than 300 windy days a year. That figure holds up. The two main winds alternate through the season and each has a different character.
The Levante blows from the east, warm and often strong — typically 18 to 35 knots. It can be gusty at first and takes a day or two to settle, but when it calms down, it gives clean flat water and good conditions for beginners working on water starts, intermediates refining technique, and advanced riders chasing freestyle or big air. Because it’s side-offshore, we always use rescue cover on Levante days.
The Poniente comes in from the Atlantic — cooler, lighter, and steadier, usually 12 to 25 knots. On hot afternoons, a thermal boost can add several knots to a light forecast and turn a marginal day into a solid session. In winter, Atlantic swells occasionally come with it, which opens up fun wave riding. For beginners, a steady Poniente day is close to ideal.
We’re open from March to November. Water temperatures are comfortable from late spring onwards, and summer brings the most reliable back-to-back wind windows.

What kitesurfing lessons we do

We teach beginners from scratch through a structured IKO curriculum: kite control on the beach first, then body-dragging in the water, then board work and riding. Most students reach independent rider level in 3 to 5 days with private lessons, or 5 to 7 days with group or semi-private courses.
For intermediates who’ve done some lessons but aren’t independent yet — or who learned a while back and need a reset — we have Restart, Refresh, and independence-focused courses. Half-private lessons with two kites work well here: both students ride at the same time with the instructor in the water.
Advanced courses cover jumps and tricks, strapless wave riding, kite foiling, and freestyle coaching. These run as private lessons or personalised coaching sessions using your own gear.
Group courses take a maximum of 4 students per instructor with 2 kites shared between the group. Semi-private takes 2 students with 1 instructor and 1 kite. Private lessons are 1-on-1 and the fastest route to progression.
We also offer supervision sessions for students who are nearly independent — an instructor watches over your session, gives feedback, and is ready if you need help. Rental gear is available separately if you want to ride on your own once you’re up to it.

Our crew

Tarifa Max was founded by Mathieu, a French naval engineer who moved to Tarifa in the late 1990s when it was still a windsurfing town. He was among the first to bring kitesurfing to the area and started teaching from the beginning. He still instructs today, IKO certified, and speaks French, English, and Spanish.
Giulia took her first kitesurfing lesson with Tarifa Max in 2018, left her corporate job by 2020, worked her way up from student to instructor to manager, and now owns the school. She holds IKO L3 and FAV certification and speaks Italian, English, Spanish, and French. She handles reservations and is the one to contact if you want to plan a course.
The rest of the team are IKO-certified instructors covering French, English, Spanish, Italian, and Arabic between them.

When there’s no wind

Tarifa has enough going on that a flat day doesn’t feel wasted. Coastal walks on the Mediterranean side near La Caleta or along the Atlantic toward Punta Paloma are genuinely good. Whale watching on the strait puts you in the water between container ships, dolphins, and pilot whales. A 30-minute drive north brings you to Vejer de la Frontera, a white hilltop village worth a long lunch. Morocco is less than an hour away by ferry.
If you want to stay in the water, we offer rental gear for independent riders and can connect you with surf spots along the coast outside of summer.

We joined the school as total beginners with no kitesurfing experience and left with a lot of confidence and passion for the sport. The team is amazing! Fun, super friendly, and really skilled. In just three days we were already up on the board and ride, thanks to the very experienced instructors. During the course we could easily adjust lesson duration and model to stay flexible, which really helped us learn faster. The experience was fantastic, and we can’t wait to come back again this summer. Big thanks to Giulia and the team for making our holiday unforgettable!

Just wrapped up an incredible experience with Tarifa Max Kite School and couldn’t recommend them enough! 🌊🪁 Giulia, who runs the company, is genuinely one of the nicest people you’ll meet. So welcoming, organised, and clearly passionate about what she does. It really sets the tone for the whole experience. And a massive shoutout to Lucho, my instructor, an absolute legend. I went in for refresher lessons and he made me feel completely comfortable from the start. His patience, kindness, and constant encouragement made such a difference, and I felt supported every step of the way. If you’re thinking about kitesurfing in Tarifa, this is 100% the place to go. Can’t wait to get back out there again!

Taking lessons with Tarifa Max completely changed my experience in Tarifa. I already kite, but I decided to take lessons because I was in a new spot and, without a doubt, it was one of the best decisions I made. I had lessons with a few different instructors from the school and loved all of them. I even recommended the school to three other friends, who also loved it and ended up booking lessons there too. On top of that, I gained a friend for life, who welcomed me as part of the Max family. I recommend it both for people who are just starting and for those looking for more advanced lessons. Or even just for your first rides, to better understand the spot before going out on your own :) Fair winds! See you next year, Max Family :)

Best price I saw and FANTASTIC teacher, gracias Manu! Giulia the owner was so professional, friendly, flexible and helpful with my logistics. The lesson was excellently tailored to my level, great equipment with the radios, and left me feeling confident and ready for more despite not having kitesurfed out of shallow water before, or with waves! Buzzing 🥰

We had a great time having kite surfing by lessons with Tarifa Max. Communication before the lessons was good and we would get updates everyday about when each lesson would take place. Instructor was really professional and excellent! Would highly recommend Tarifa Max, they were brilliant, thank you!
