KitePassion Tarifa has been teaching kitesurfing lessons in Tarifa, Spain, for over 15 years, making it one of the most established kite schools on Spain’s Costa de la Luz. Our home spot sits on the sand at Valdevaqueros, next to Chiringuito Volare, on the southern tip of Andalusia where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic. This stretch of coast built Tarifa’s reputation as the kitesurfing capital of Europe, thanks to two winds that trade off through the year: the strong, gusty Levante from the east and the gentler Poniente from the west.

About our spot at Valdevaqueros
Valdevaqueros is a wide, curving cove that stays sailable in nearly any wind direction. The shape of the coastline carries anything that drifts toward Punta Paloma rather than out to sea, so this is the spot we recommend whenever the Levante is blowing hard. From June to September, rescue boats patrol the water in front of Camping Río Jara, and you’ll find our flag marking our spot on the beach at Chiringuito Volare.
On Poniente days, Los Lances beach works well too. The northern stretch near Chiringuito Arte y Vida picks up waves for riders who want them, while the southern end, near the football stadium, stays flatter. More experienced riders head to Balneario or Río Jara when the Levante is up. A local venturi effect flattens the water there and holds a steady breeze, though it’s not a spot to ride alone.
Our kitesurfing season in Tarifa
Tarifa sits at the point where the Strait of Gibraltar funnels air between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, and that funnel is why the town is known as one of the windiest places in Europe. Two winds shape the season. The Levante blows from the east, a strong, often gusty ground wind that runs straight offshore south of Los Lances, so riders need to read conditions carefully before heading out. The Poniente blows from the west, a gentler onshore wind better suited to less experienced riders. Come summer, thermal winds build reliably over Valdevaqueros, so the cove holds close to guaranteed wind through July and August.
Kitesurfing lessons we teach
We teach every level, from a first taste of the sport through to advanced coaching, and we specialise in working with children. A typical beginner course runs two to four days, with two to three hours on the water each day: kite control and safety systems on day one, body drag in the water on day two, and first water starts by day three. Group courses are capped at three to four students sharing kites, with the instructor alongside the whole time. Semi-private lessons pair two students with two kites and one instructor, and private lessons put you one-on-one with your instructor for the fastest progress. Every course includes North Kiteboarding or Eleveight equipment, liability and accident insurance, an IKO level card at the end, and instruction from our FAV and IKO Level 2 instructors, backed by rescue boats and walkie-talkie radios throughout.
We also teach wingfoil lessons, a sport that sits somewhere between windsurfing and kitesurfing and comes into its own on lighter wind days when kiting isn’t an option. Private wingfoil lessons include the board, the wing and full instruction, a good way to keep riding when the wind drops.
The crew
Our instructors hold IKO Level 2 and FAV certification, the standards we build our safety and teaching approach around. We only run courses in suitable conditions, never pushing students out to chase a booking. Train with us, and you’re part of the KitePassion community from then on. Our equipment
Lessons use North Kiteboarding and Eleveight Kites, along with wetsuits, helmets and harnesses. For rental and wingfoil sessions, we also work with ION, Fanatic, Alder Softboards and Mystic.
Our accommodation
We put together package deals that combine lessons with accommodation, including a private course with several nights included, or a semi-private option for anyone travelling with a friend. We also arrange stays at South Hostel Tarifa, five minutes from the beach, for students who want lessons and a place to stay sorted in one booking.
No-wind activities
When the wind drops, we run surf and SUP lessons on the same beaches, so a flat day doesn’t have to mean a day off the water.
