What you're in for

Dragon Bay Sailing & Watersports Club has been running sailing, windsurfing, wingfoil & kitesurfing lessons on North Sound in Grand Cayman since 2023. Our club sits at Safehaven on the shore of the sound, five minutes from Seven Mile Beach. Easterly trade winds drive North Sound for much of the year, and the launch area gives beginners plenty of room.

At a glance:

  • We are a kite school and watersports club at Safehaven on North Sound, Grand Cayman
  • We teach kitesurfing lessons and wingfoil lessons for complete beginners, with a maximum of two students per coach on the complete kitesurfing course
  • A safety boat stays with every session
  • Equipment: kite, board, harness and safety gear come with the lesson price
  • Wind: easterly trade winds, with our main kitesurfing season running mid-October to mid-April
  • Our coaches teach in English, Spanish and Italian
  • On site: bathrooms, changing rooms, showers, freshwater rinse, parking, Wi-Fi, storage and shade

About our spot at Safehaven

Our launch and landing area is sheltered, with direct water access from the base. We have a sand-free launch and take-off pad, so sand stays out of your kit and you have room to rig, launch and land.

Students learn in stages. We start on land with the safety systems, move into shallow water, then head out to deeper water with the safety boat alongside.

Our kitesurfing season in Cayman

Our main kitesurfing season runs from mid-October to mid-April. November to March gives the most consistent wind, mostly from the east to north-east. Winter cold fronts sometimes swing it north or north-west and change conditions quickly.

April and May are warmer and more variable, with trade-wind days, lighter spells and the first showers. June to August brings mostly east to south-east wind, often stronger after a tropical wave passes. Conditions can be excellent then, but showers and short squalls show up more often. September and October are usually the least consistent months, and September tends to be one of the calmest.

We watch the forecast closely. If the wind isn’t right for a safe, useful lesson, we reschedule. Forecasts are guidance, not a guarantee, so we also suggest checking the Cayman Islands National Weather Service before you head out. Our website carries a live Windy forecast for the base.

Our wingfoil & kitesurfing lessons

We run three formats. Discover Kitesurfing is a two-hour first session on the fundamentals and flying the kite. The Complete Kitesurfing Course runs three two-hour lessons, six hours in total, and takes you from safety and kite control to your first metres on the board. We keep it to a maximum of two students per coach. Private Progression Coaching is one hour, one-to-one, for working on a specific skill or sticking point.

There is no fixed minimum age. Suitability depends on weight, size, and whether you can control the equipment safely, so contact us, and we will assess you individually. Book online, and we get back to you within 24 hours to fit a session around the wind and our availability.

Our wingfoil lessons follow the same three formats. Discover Wingfoil takes two hours. The Complete Wingfoil Course covers wing control, board balance and direction over three two-hour lessons, then builds toward your first flights. Private coaching is one hour, one-to-one. You don’t need any experience to start, though a sailing or board-sport background helps.

The crew

Our coaches teach in English, Spanish and Italian. They all work from the Safehaven base, and you can message us on WhatsApp or by email before you book if you want to talk through your level or your kids’ ages first.

Our equipment

The lesson price covers the kite, board, harness and safety equipment for kitesurfing, and the wing, board, foil and safety equipment for wingfoil. Experienced riders can also rent kite and wing gear by the hour, along with booties, a lifejacket, a helmet and a leash. We need 24 hours’ notice by WhatsApp or email, and rentals run Wednesday to Sunday. Hobie Wave and windsurf rentals need basic sailing or windsurfing experience. Beginners book a lesson first.

More time on the water

We also teach sailing and windsurfing, and we rent out Hobie Wave catamarans. Our kids’ academies cover sailing and wingfoil from age 8, and a general watersports academy starts at age 5. They run in after-school and weekend slots, with homeschool group options. Racing programmes take sailors and wingfoilers by invitation or tryout.
