What you're in for

KiteLife Watersports runs kitesurfing lessons in Essaouira, one of the windiest cities on Morocco’s Atlantic coast. Our home beach sits right on Essaouira Bay, a few minutes’ walk from the old town, with our favourite spot at Ord Omar a short drive further south. Essaouira has been on the map as a kitesurfing destination longer than almost anywhere else in the country, and the wind still blows here nearly every day of the year.

At a glance:

  • We are a kite, surf and wingfoil school based on Essaouira Bay, one of Morocco’s original kitesurfing spots
  • Kitesurfing lessons for all levels, from first-timers to advanced riders, run as group, semi-private and private classes
  • Wingfoil and surf lessons taught by the same instructors alongside kitesurfing
  • Safety: rescue support in deep water, dedicated insurance and a video briefing and debrief with every course
  • Equipment: Harlem Kitesurfing twintip and strapless boards, new and secondhand
  • Wind: Atlantic wind blows 80-100% of days from April to September, 55-75% from October to March, with air temperatures around 25°C
  • Multilingual instructors teaching in German, English, French, Spanish and Moroccan Arabic
  • Kitesurf camps of 4, 6 and 8 days, with accommodation, breakfast, a welcome dinner and airport transfer included
  • A personal photographer joins every course, with high resolution pictures included

About our spot in Essaouira

Essaouira offers two kite spots, both with shallow water that makes life easier for anyone still finding their feet on a board. Essaouira Bay is the main one, a half-moon stretch of sand only a few minutes’ walk from the old town walls, with a side-onshore breeze for most of the year. The wind gets messier toward the northern end of the bay and cleans up as you head south. That’s what pulls us, and most of our students, ten minutes further down the coast to Ord Omar, known locally as the Second Beach. It’s quieter, away from the tourist crowds, and a good place to learn to kitesurf without dodging other riders.

Our kitesurfing season in Essaouira

Essaouira has earned its nickname, The Windy City, honestly. The Atlantic wind blows here with a probability of 80-100% between April and September, dropping only to 55-75% from October through March. Air temperatures sit around 25°C for much of the year, so there’s rarely a bad stretch to book a kitesurfing course. Essaouira built its reputation as a kitesurfing spot well before most other parts of Morocco, and the wind is the reason why.

Wingfoil & kitesurfing lessons we teach

We teach kitesurfing lessons through a six-step method built from more than a decade teaching and competing across four continents: understanding the safety systems first, then kite control on the beach, body dragging, the waterstart, riding in both directions, and finally riding upwind as an independent rider. Courses run as group, semi-private or private lessons. Every session includes video recording with a briefing and debrief, so you can see exactly where your technique needs work. A personal photographer joins you on the beach too, and every course includes insurance along with rescue support out in deep water.

For longer stays, we run 4, 6 and 8 day kitesurfing camps that bundle accommodation, breakfast, a welcome dinner, airport transfer and a local SIM card into one booking.

We also teach wingfoil lessons and surf lessons alongside kitesurfing, so a flat or gusty day doesn’t have to mean sitting on the beach. Wingfoiling works especially well when the wind is too light or too messy for kiting, and the same instructors who run our kitesurfing courses teach it.

Our crew

Our instructors come from both Morocco and Europe, and between us we teach in German, English, French, Spanish and Moroccan Arabic. Some of our team grew up in Essaouira, picking up surfing, then windsurfing, then kitesurfing as each sport reached the town. Others arrived from Spain, chasing the same wind that keeps all of us here.

Our equipment

We teach and rent Harlem Kitesurfing gear, a Dutch brand we’ve come to trust for how long it holds up. Our fleet covers twintip and strapless boards, and we sell both new and secondhand Harlem equipment for students ready to buy their own kit.

Our accommodation

Our multi-day camps include accommodation as standard, from 3 nights on the 4 day camp up to 7 nights on the 8 day camp, with breakfast and a welcome dinner included. We also build custom packages around your preferences and budget, combining lessons, transfers and accommodation, with extras like a massage or yoga session if you want them.

No-wind activities

When the wind takes a day off, Essaouira still has plenty going on: yoga, quad or bike tours, horseback and camel rides, cooking or language classes, sand surfing, or a visit to one of the town’s hammams and spas. The historic medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a short walk from the beach, and day trips out to the dunes or to Marrakech are easy to arrange.

Just finished my lessons with KiteLife and I highly recommend them. Learning to kite can be quite intense and frustrating at first, but Moncef was the perfect instructor. He stayed super calm, explained everything clearly, and made sure I felt safe on the water at all times. The overall vibe at the school is very welcoming and chill. Thanks Moncef for the great experience!

We booked our kitesurf experience with Moncef through Surfcamps and couldn’t be happier! The accommodation was a solid 10/10: a perfectly equipped apartment where we had our own room and shared the common areas with one other person. Everything was super clean and thoughtfully set up – from multiple coffee machines to a fully equipped kitchen. The two balconies (one facing the courtyard, one the street) were a great bonus. It truly felt like a home away from home. The absolute highlight, however, was the kitesurfing itself. Monsef is by far the best kitesurf instructor we’ve ever had. He explains everything clearly, stays calm and motivating, and adapts perfectly to your individual skill level. As beginners, we made huge progress in a very short time. The whole team was incredibly friendly, professional, and always in a great mood. You can really feel the passion behind what they do, and their focus on safety and fun makes a big difference. Everything was also very well organized from start to finish – booking, communication, and the sessions on site all ran smoothly. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to learn kitesurfing or take their skills to the next level. We will definitely be back! 🌊🤙

I had 3 kite lessons with Samad and it was great, he was very nice, explained everything well, and took good care of me. His colleague was also around and was always there to help or support us when we needed to change kites. The pricing is more reasonable compared to many other schools in the area and great service and quality. The communication with the kite school was really smooth, responsive and clear. They even invited me to have dinners with them sometimes which was super sweet! The equipment is great quality, I love the trailer setup they have to store all the kite equipment. It’s super practical and comfortable to change and get ready inside. They even have a little water pump to clean the sand off your feet if needed. I found this little attention to detail super neat! They have all the kites you need in there, I switched kites sometimes as the wind picked up or dropped. Overall, look no further and kite with KiteLife Watersports!! 😁🤙🏽

What a great experience with Kitelife. I got kite lessons from Moncef. I had already had a few lessons, but it had been a while. Moncef took the time to go over everything again to help me get used to the equipment. Then we learned the water start step by step, and as a result, I was able to sail some nice distances. He was very patient, helpful, friendly, cheerful and motivating. His English was also very clear. Afterwards, we all went out for a nice meal with the whole group and had a great evening. In short, a highly recommended, high-quality kite instructor! Thank you, Moncef!!!

We had a fantastic experience with this kite school and can highly recommend it. From the very beginning, the communication and advice from Moncef and Ariane were excellent. They answered all our questions in advance, helped us plan everything, and made the entire booking process smooth and stress-free. Once we arrived, everything was perfectly organized and ran exactly as promised. Unfortunately, the wind conditions did not allow us to use all the lessons we had booked. However, the school handled this in an extremely fair and professional way, and we received an immediate refund for the unused hours without any discussion. A special thank you also goes to our instructor, Samad. We had a lot of fun with him during our lessons. He is a genuinely friendly, funny, and easy-going person who creates a relaxed atmosphere while still being a professional and attentive instructor. Learning with him was a real pleasure. What impressed us even more was the support we received beyond kitesurfing. During our stay, we were victims of a theft on the beach. Moncef went above and beyond to help us. He supported us with communication and translation when dealing with the Moroccan authorities and was incredibly helpful during a very stressful situation. This level of customer care is rare and shows that they genuinely care about their guests, not just about running a kite school. Thank you, Moncef, Ariane, Samad, and the entire team for your professionalism, kindness, and outstanding support. We hope to be back soon! 🌊🪁🙏
