Mouja Wave has been running kitesurfing lessons in Essaouira on the Atlantic coast of Morocco for over a decade. About our spot in Essaouira
Essaouira beach is wide and sandy. The North wind arrives side-onshore, which keeps beginners safe and gives more experienced riders a reliable launch and landing angle. Close to shore, the water stays shallow — ideal for the first stages of learning, whether you’re starting kitesurfing or trying wingfoiling for the first time.
The town behind the beach is worth knowing too. Essaouira is a UNESCO-listed medina city with a genuine local character, fresh Atlantic seafood, and the kind of atmosphere that makes riders stay longer than they planned. It’s not a purpose-built surf resort. It’s a real place that happens to sit in the path of very good wind.
Our kitesurfing season in Essaouira
The wind blows almost year-round in Essaouira. The North trade wind is most reliable from March to October, with July and August offering the most consistent conditions and the longest sessions. The shoulder months — March to June and September to October — give solid wind with a quieter beach. Winter sees lighter wind, but the Atlantic swell picks up and the surf gets interesting.
Water temperature stays cool throughout the year. We kit everyone out with a wetsuit.
Kitesurfing lessons we provide
We run group lessons capped at four students per instructor, semi-private lessons for pairs, and one-on-one private coaching. All three formats cover beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. Sessions start at two hours and can be extended — a 10-hour block is a good target for beginners wanting to reach independent riding.
Every lesson comes with full kitesurf equipment, a certified instructor, radio communication, and professional photography of your session.
We also offer wingfoil lessons in Essaouira. The same steady trade winds that make this one of the best kitesurfing spots in Morocco also make it a strong learning environment for wingfoiling. A session is two hours with a certified instructor and all gear included — foil board, inflatable wing, harness, helmet, impact vest, and leash. Beginners are welcome, and our instructors are used to taking people from zero to first flight.
For surf, we run surf lessons across all levels and surf day trips to spots up and down the coast — Diabat, Ouassane, and Sidi Kaouki among them.
The crew
Mouja Wave was founded by Oussama, who runs the school alongside co-owner Wassim. Our instructors are certified and teach in English, French, and Arabic. Every lesson uses radio communication between instructor and student, so guidance stays constant throughout the session.
Our equipment
We ride Cabrinha and Duotone kites. Boards, harnesses, wetsuits, and accessories are from Zeus, Ion, Mystic, and Ocean Earth. Wingfoil gear is all included in wingfoil sessions.
Retreats and packages
We put together surf, kitesurf, and yoga retreat packages covering one to six nights. Accommodation options run from traditional riads and studios through to apartments and villas — or you can build your own package. Activities beyond the water include yoga sessions, camel rides, and guided excursions into the medina.
When the wind takes a day off, Essaouira keeps you occupied. The medina alone is a half-day on foot. The beach still works for SUP, kayaking, or just watching the Atlantic roll in.
