What you're in for

Happy Kite has been offering kitesurfing lessons in Essaouira ever since the Atlantic coast of Morocco first drew wind chasers to this part of the world. Our school sits right on the sand at Essaouira beach, in Morocco. The wind here blows almost year-round, and it’s this simple fact that brought us here and keeps us here.

At a glance:

  • We are an IKO-certified kite school based on the beach in Essaouira, Morocco
  • Kitesurfing lessons for beginners, intermediate and advanced riders with max 4 students per group lesson, 2 in semi-private, 1 in private
  • Equipment included: kite, board, harness, wetsuit
  • IKO certificate issued on completion of the course
  • Wind: North wind, side-onshore, strongest March to October; reliable year-round
  • Instructor Karim is IKO-certified with over nine years of teaching experience in Morocco, Sri Lanka and Vietnam
  • No on-site accommodation, but we can arrange hotels, riads or apartments nearby as part of a package

About our spot in Essaouira

Essaouira sits on Morocco’s Atlantic coast, directly in the path of the North wind. The beach is wide and sandy, the water is shallow close to shore, and the wind comes in side-onshore — which means it pushes you toward the beach rather than out to sea. For beginners, that matters. For everyone else, it just makes the spot more enjoyable.

It’s not a resort destination. Essaouira is a working port city with a walled medina, a strong local identity, and a beach that happens to be one of the most consistent kitesurfing spots in Africa. The waves get bigger in winter. In summer, the wind picks up and the beach fills out. Whatever time of year you come, there’s something to ride.

What’s the kitesurfing season in Essaouira?

The wind blows almost all year in Essaouira. The North wind is strongest and most reliable from March to October, with July and August being the peak months — expect consistent conditions and a busier beach. The shoulder season, roughly March to June and September to October, gives you solid wind with fewer people around. Winter brings lighter, less predictable wind, but the surf gets good.

Water temperature stays on the cooler side year-round, so we always kit you out with a wetsuit.

Kitesurfing lessons we provide

We run three formats: private, semi-private and group. Private lessons are one student, one instructor, one kite. Semi-private pairs you with one other student but keeps your own equipment. Group lessons cap at four students per instructor. All three formats are available across all levels: beginners, intermediate riders who want to build confidence, and more experienced kitesurfers looking to progress their skills.

Lessons follow the IKO methodology. We start on the beach with safety, equipment, and kite control before moving into the water. Each lesson is adapted to where you actually are, not a fixed script. Most beginners reach independent riding after a series of lessons, but the pace is yours.

An IKO certificate comes with the course.

We also offer surf lessons on days when the wind is light or when you just want a different kind of session on the water.

The crew

Happy Kite was founded by Karim and Neringa. Karim was born and raised in Essaouira and has been teaching kitesurfing and surfing for over nine years across Morocco, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. He holds IKO certification. Neringa handles the marketing side and keeps everything running behind the scenes.

The school is small on purpose. You’ll deal with the same people from the first message to the last session.

No-wind activities

When the wind doesn’t show up, Essaouira still delivers. We can arrange yoga, horse riding along the beach, camel rides, and quad biking through the dunes. The medina is worth a day of wandering on its own. If you want us to put together a full package with lessons, accommodation, transfers, and activities, we do that too.

My first surfing experience with Happy Kite in Essaouira was honestly one of the highlights of my trip. From the moment we arrived at the club, the atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. The instructors took the time to clearly explain the basics on the sand before we entered the water. As a complete beginner, that made a huge difference because I felt confident and prepared before trying it myself. What I appreciated most was the way the instructors guided us step by step. They demonstrated the movements, corrected our mistakes, and kept encouraging us after every attempt. Thanks to their coaching, I actually managed to stand up and ride a wave a few times during my very first session — an incredible feeling.

I had an amazing experience learning kitesurfing with Happy Kite! Karim was the best kite instructor I’ve ever had – super patient, positive, and really understanding with his students. He always motivates you, gives helpful feedback, and makes sure you feel safe and confident on the water. What I really appreciated is how fair he is with lesson time and prices. If you’re looking for a professional and friendly kite school, I can 100% recommend Happy Kite and Karim. Thank you, it was a big pleasure!

Learning to surf with in Essaouira was a revelation, thanks in the main to brilliant tuition by Karim, his patience and optimism that I would actually get up! I'd tried with various other teachers in the past, but Karim was the one to help me feel the fear and do it anyway! Neringa was also a great inspiration in terms of providing local knowledge of the city, being very reassuring to me as a woman travelling alone in Morocco, and all in all, I loved the vibe of Happy Kite. They are happiness personified, and I can't wait to come back. I'm not a young thing either, by the way, and Karim made me feel very comfortable about that, and made me feel part of the team, reassuring me that surfing is for all ages and all experiences. Next time, I hope to try kitesurfing!
