Algarve Kite Center has been teaching kitesurfing lessons at the Alvor lagoon in Lagos since 2008, making it one of the longest-running kite schools on Portugal’s southern coast. Our school sits right on the sand at the Lagos kite lagoon, in Odiaxere, on the south coast of the Algarve in Portugal. The Nortada, the northwestern thermal wind that builds along this coastline from late spring through October, is what keeps riders coming back year after year.

About our spot in Lagos
The Kite Lagoon at Lagos is a tidal estuary with a sandy bottom and shallow, flat water. That combination makes it one of the more forgiving learning environments in Portugal. The lagoon breaks into zones depending on the tide: a wide, knee-to-hip-deep training area when the tide is rising, deeper open water for riders who are already progressing. When the tide comes in, the current drops and the usable area expands. Best sessions happen on a rising tide.
We know this kitesurfing spot in detail and schedule lessons around the tides each day. There are hazards worth knowing: a strong current in the centre at low tide, a rocky shoreline on one edge, and submerged oyster farm structures at certain water levels. We brief every student on all of it before they get in the water.
Our kitesurfing season in Lagos
The Nortada runs from roughly May through October. It is a thermal wind, driven by hot air rising over Portugal’s interior and cool Atlantic air rushing in to replace it. It builds through the morning and peaks in the afternoon, usually between 15 and 25 knots. June, July and August are the most reliable months. Water temperatures sit around 18°C in May, rising to 22-23°C in late summer. A 3mm wetsuit covers most of the season.
Winter can bring the Levante, a southeastern wind that opens up different spots around the Algarve for riders who want to explore further.
Kitesurfing lessons we provide
The five-day beginner course takes students from zero to riding upwind. Day one covers wind theory, safety systems and two-line trainer kite work. By day two, you are in the water with a full four-line kite, practising body drag and kite control. Water starts come on day three, and by days four and five most students are riding in both directions and working upwind. Groups run at a maximum of four students per instructor, with two kites shared between the group so everyone gets real time on the gear. Private and half-private lessons are available for faster progression or specific skill work.
We also run wingfoil lessons using the same lagoon. Shallow, flat water is good for learning to fly a foil board, no swell to knock you off balance, room to fall safely, and the rescue boat nearby. Wingfoil lessons follow the same small-group structure. Whether you are starting from scratch or dialling in transitions, we build sessions around the tides.
The crew
Alex, who owns and runs the school, has been working on this lagoon since 2008. Instructors hold international certifications and bring a minimum of two years’ teaching experience. Each one knows the lagoon across every season and every tide stage, which matters when conditions shift. Lessons run with radio helmets so coaching happens in real time without the instructor needing to be beside you in the water.
Our equipment
We use CORE kites across the lesson fleet, sized for different wind strengths and rider weights. Full rental sets, kite, board, bar, harness and wetsuit, are available by the day. The on-site kite shop carries spare parts, accessories and equipment, both new and second-hand.
Our accommodation
We have two options close to the school. The Kite Lagoon Apartment in Odiaxere is about 2km from the lagoon, sleeps four, and comes with a full kitchen, air conditioning, WiFi and a washing machine. The Lagos Town Guest House is in Lagos itself, near the marina and Batata Beach, with seven double and triple rooms, a shared kitchen, lounge and breakfast included. Both are bookable alongside lessons.
No-wind activities
SUP rental is available through the school. Lagos town handles rest days well, old town, beaches, the marina, and a lively nightlife scene in summer.
