What you're in for

Kukulkite Netherlands runs kitesurfing lessons around Amsterdam, choosing between flat inland lake water and open sea depending on which way the wind is blowing that day. Our base is on Bilderijkstraat in Amsterdam, and we teach at spots within a 30 to 45-minute drive of the city, switching between the IJsselmeer side and the North Sea coast as conditions change. Having two completely different types of water on tap means there’s almost always a spot that suits the day. It’s why we run as a mobile school instead of tying every lesson to one beach.

At a glance:

  • We are an IKO-affiliated kite school based in Amsterdam
  • Kukulkite Netherlands is a little sister of Kukulkite Holbox in Mexico
  • Kitesurfing lessons for beginners through advanced riders: private lessons (1 student per instructor) and duo lessons (2 students per instructor), plus a discovery taster for groups
  • Radio helmet coaching on every lesson
  • Equipment: 2026 Eleveight kites, all gear included, just bring a swimsuit
  • Wind: we choose from four spots between the IJsselmeer and the North Sea depending on conditions
  • International team speaking Dutch, English, Spanish and French
  • IKO certificate awarded on completing a course
  • Kitesurfing 12 months a year: Kukulkite Amsterdam from May to October, Kukulkite Holbox in Mexico from November to May

About our spots around Amsterdam

We work four main spots: IJmuiden, Wijk aan Zee, Schellinkhout and Muiderberg, all within 30 to 45 minutes of the city by car. Between them, we cover flat, shallow water with steady wind for people learning the basics, and rougher, wavier conditions with stronger wind for the days when more experienced riders want to push themselves. Which spot we use for your lesson depends on the forecast, not on habit. We check conditions on both the IJsselmeer side and the North Sea coast before confirming where to meet, so a lesson booked for a lake day can just as easily end up at the beach. The lake spots tend to stay flatter and shallower, a good match for first-timers finding their feet, while the coastal spots bring more chop and current for riders who already know what they’re doing and want the extra challenge.

Our kitesurfing season in the Netherlands

Our season runs from May to October, when conditions on both coasts are dependable enough to build a full course around. Once the Dutch season winds down, Chris and the team move the school to Kukulkite Holbox in Mexico, running from November to May. Between the two locations, we teach somewhere in the world every month of the year, so a course started in Amsterdam in September doesn’t have to wait until next spring to continue.

Kitesurfing lessons we provide

We run three types of lesson. Private kitesurfing lessons put you one-on-one with an instructor for two hours, with radio coaching and all kite gear included. Most students reach independence in around three private lessons. Duo kitesurfing lessons pair you with one other student, sharing an instructor and kite over three hours, and typically take about five sessions to get you riding on your own. If you just want to try it out with friends before committing to a full course, our discovery lesson is a three-hour group taster built as an introduction rather than a certification path. All three formats work the same way underneath. The instructor sets the pace to match the student, not a script. Every course finishes with an IKO certificate, recognised at kite spots worldwide, so you can prove you can ride independently wherever you travel next.

The crew

Kukulkite started life on Isla Holbox in Mexico. Head instructor Chris founded the school there, and Kukulkite Netherlands came about after he met Elke, who is Dutch. Chris has spent over a decade in the kite industry. He’s taught and managed schools in Mexico, Peru, Cuba, Brazil, France, the Dominican Republic, Sardinia and Spain, and now Amsterdam. Elke handles bookings, questions and trip planning, and she’s out on the water herself whenever she gets the chance. Between the team, we speak Dutch, English, Spanish and French, so language is rarely a barrier to a lesson.

Our equipment

We teach with 2026 Eleveight kites and provide all the gear you need for your lesson. Just bring a swimsuit and we’ll sort out the rest.

Kite trips beyond Amsterdam

Outside the Dutch season, Chris and TonTon run kite trips and coaching weeks through Trip&Tips, taking riders to warm, flat and shallow spots abroad to build on what they’ve learned at home. It grew out of the trips Kukulkite used to run directly, and it’s now a separate way for our students to keep progressing once the Amsterdam season ends.

Chris is a fantastic guy who tries to provide best possible quality experience to his clients. Although booking a training with another person, we got a kite each to achieve the most progress during our lesson.

The team was excellent. Elke was easy to communicate with regards to setting everything up in the small window I had while in Amsterdam. Christian was very friendly and my instructor Alex was fantastic as well. He catered the lessons to help me progress and was very encouraging. The equipment was great. The wetsuit, Ozone kite and control bar looked new. The Muiderberg location was perfect. Waist deep water. No waves. Very beginner friendly. I really enjoyed the whole experience.

Thanks for the awesome first kitesurf experience, Alex (and Chris) ! He’s a very good instructor giving clear instructions which makes it a great experience. Two lessons in (one lesson in Enkhuizen and one in Schellinkhout) and already got to ride upwind a bit. You got me hooked. Cheers !
