What you're in for

Kukulkite runs wingfoil & kitesurfing lessons on Holbox Island, in the Mexican Caribbean, where consistent winds and shallow turquoise waters have been drawing wind chasers to this corner of the Yucatán Peninsula for years. Our kitesurfing school is based in town, right on the island of Holbox, off the northern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. Holbox is car-free, small, and genuinely unlike most kite destinations. The water is warm, the pace is slow, and the conditions are better than most people expect until they get here.

At a glance:

  • Kitesurfing and wingfoil lessons for all levels, from complete beginners to independent riders
  • Discovery, One-Day, Extended, and Full Course options. Private, double, and group lessons available
  • Full Course: 9 hours over 2 to 3 days, most students reach independent riding by the end
  • Wingfoil lessons available: 2-hour sessions, private or with a partner
  • Wind: 250+ days/year, 15-25 knots, directions from E, NE, N, and NW. Strong Norte cold fronts Nov–Feb (25-30 knots)
  • Two kite spots: Las Nubes (flat lagoon, walk-in) and Punta Mosquito (boat access, all levels)
  • Equipment rental available (full kit, kite + bar, harness, board)
  • Team of 6+ qualified instructors from different nationalities, teaching in 6 languages
  • Core team: Verónica and Sergio

About our spot at Holbox

We use two spots depending on the wind direction and your level, and each has its own character. Las Nubes (also called Kite Beach) is the main teaching spot. It’s about 2 km from town, reachable by bike, golf cart, or on foot, with a flat lagoon, a sandbar roughly 100 metres offshore, and shallow, sandy-bottomed water. Winds here are typically N, NE, and NW, producing conditions that go from butter-flat to light chop. It’s calm enough for beginners to get their first board metres without stress, and flat enough for foil riders to work on clean technique. One thing to know: there are occasional hidden stones and shifting sand near the shore, so look where you’re walking at launch. Punta Mosquito is the other spot, a wide, open beach reached by a 10-minute boat ride. Conditions here run choppier, with E to SE winds common from March through July. It suits all levels but is particularly good for advanced riders and foilers looking for a bit more space and energy. It sits within a protected wildlife area, so we ask everyone to ride upwind of the point and stay aware of nesting zones. One other thing worth knowing: stingrays are around in Holbox. They’re peaceful and a sign of genuinely clean water, but shuffle your feet when walking in and consider wearing water shoes.

Our kitesurfing season in Holbox

The main kiteboarding season runs from November through to July or August, when winds are most consistent. We see more than 250 wind days a year, with 15-25 knots the typical range. Between November and February, Norte cold fronts push through every week or two, bringing strong northerly gusts of 25-30 knots. These days suit experienced riders looking for power. Conditions ease back to 15-20 knots after the front passes. From February onward, nortes become less frequent and easterly winds take over, often boosted by afternoon thermals generated by the island’s position relative to Cabo Catoche. Wind directions across the season include N, NE, E, SE, and occasionally NW and W, enough variation to keep both spots in play throughout. The water is warm year-round, though a shorty wetsuit is a sensible idea during Norte days.

Our wingfoil & kitesurfing lessons

We offer kitesurfing lessons at several levels, so you can start wherever makes sense and buy as many hours as you need. The Discovery Course is 2 hours — the right entry point if you want to try it before committing further. You’ll cover wind theory, kite setup and safety, then get into kite control on land and in the water. A step up is the One-Day Course: 3 hours in a single day, giving more time to build on the basics. The Extended Course covers 6 hours over two days. The Full Course goes to 9 hours across 2 to 3 days and is designed to take you from zero to independent riding. Most students are on the board and riding by the end of it. All courses come in private, two-person, and group formats. Group options keep the price accessible without sacrificing too much attention time. We teach in 6 languages, so language is rarely a barrier. We also offer wingfoil lessons. Sessions run in 2-hour blocks and work for both beginners stepping onto a wing for the first time and riders looking to progress. The flat water at Las Nubes makes it a clean environment to develop wing control and foil balance without fighting chop. Private and two-person options are available.

Our crew

The core of Kukulkite is Verónica and Sergio, two kiters who love this sport and love this island. The wider team is made up of more than six qualified instructors from different nationalities, covering six languages between them. We’re a school built around people who actually kite here, which tends to show in how lessons run.

No-wind activities

Holbox keeps you busy on the light-wind days. The island itself, 42 km long, car-free, surrounded by wildlife, is worth exploring properly. Dolphins, manta rays, flamingos, and a long list of migratory birds all pass through. The town has good seafood, vibrant street art, and an easy pace that most people find hard to leave quickly. Cancún, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum are all within a couple of hours if you want a day off-island.

My girlfriend and I were absolutely blown away by our 3-day beginner course (3 hours per day). We truly couldn’t have wished for a better instructor. Eric explained the basics in an incredibly clear and easy way, and learning with him was an absolute pleasure and a lot of fun. By the second day, both of us were already riding our first meters with the kite and the board. On the third day, we were even able to ride in open water, which completely exceeded our expectations. On top of that, the practice spot is absolutely stunning, and everyone from the Kulkulkite team is exceptionally kind, welcoming, and supportive. We can’t recommend this experience highly enough! 🌊🪁

I came to Holbox at the end of January 2026. I was here for a week and took 8 hours of lessons while here. I am a beginner and would highly recommend taking lessons with Kukulkite Holbox Kitesurf School. I found the instructors to be highly knowledgable and able to work with you, whatever level you are at. My boyfriend is more experienced and by the end of the week he was doing jumps in the air. I am still learning how to get up on the board, but my instructor, Mathis, was very patient with me, and by the end of the week I was able to ride more than I could when I started. Some days were very windy, and when I said it was too much for me to handle that day, they let me end early without any problem. The instructors were friendly and I was happy overall with my experience here.

They really know what they are doing. I had a great time and made good learning progress during my 3-day kite course (3x3 hours). I started as a complete beginner, and thanks to my instructor Alvaro, I was already able to stand on the board during the first session. The lessons were professional, motivating, and a lot of fun. Highly recommended!

We booked 5 days of lessons with Kukulkite in November 2025 and had an absolutely fantastic experience! The spot is a true paradise: a beautiful beach, crystal-clear shallow water, and warm conditions where you can kite in just swim shorts. Our group started at different levels—two of us with only a few hours of experience and one more advanced—and the team adapted perfectly. We ended up doing a great mix of lessons and freestyle rental. The instructors were amazing: friendly, fun, and highly professional. Lessons were scheduled the night before, and when the wind changed direction they even took us by boat to a beach with onshore wind to make sure we got the best conditions. On a day when the wind was too weak, they cancelled the session without charge, which we really appreciated. Thank you for an incredible week—highly recommended, and we hope to be back soon! 🤙
