What you're in for

KiteSchool Pro runs kitesurfing lessons on Sylt, Germany’s northernmost island and one of the most wind-exposed stretches of coastline in all of northern Europe. Our school sits on the island of Sylt itself, off the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein in northern Germany. Nearly 100 kilometres of coastline wraps around this island, and the North Sea doesn’t hold back.

At a glance:

  • We are an IKO-certified school on Sylt, Germany
  • Kitesurfing lessons for beginners through advanced, one-on-one instruction (1:1 student-to-instructor ratio)
  • 90-minute taster session available from €120; full course levels at €360 per level (3 hours per level, equipment included)
  • Equipment included: wetsuit, kite gear, impact vest, helmet, harness
  • Wind season: April to October, best conditions May through September
  • Instructors are IKO- and VDWS-certified; lessons in German and English
  • Glamping accommodation available at Campingplatz Mühlenhof (partner arrangement)

About our spot on Sylt

Sylt has been pulling riders to Germany’s North Sea coast for decades, and it’s not hard to see why. The island runs roughly 40 kilometres north to south but narrows to just a few hundred metres in places, which means the wind finds you no matter where you go. We operate across both coastlines, and that’s one of the things that makes Sylt genuinely useful as a learning spot. The eastern Wadden Sea side faces the tidal flats — shallow, calm water with almost no chop, ideal for beginners getting to grips with body drags and first water starts. The western side faces the open North Sea, where conditions get proper: waves, stronger gusts, more current. That’s where our advanced students and experienced free-riders head. The Westerland promenade, right on the west coast, even hosts the annual Surf World Cup — which tells you something about what the conditions can deliver here.

Our kitesurfing season on Sylt

The season runs April to October. Wind picks up consistently from late spring and stays reliable through the summer months. Sylt’s exposure to the North Sea means the island catches wind from multiple directions throughout the season — south-westerlies and westerlies are most common, but the island’s geography means we’re rarely without options. Water temperatures range from around 12°C in spring to 18–19°C in the height of summer, so a wetsuit is standard kit whatever the time of year. If you’re planning your trip around wind, May through September gives you the most reliable window. The Wadden Sea east side tends to be more consistent for flat-water sessions, while the west coast can fire up quickly when the Atlantic systems come through.

Kitesurfing lessons we provide

We teach one-on-one. Every lesson — beginner, intermediate, advanced — runs with one instructor per student. That’s not just a marketing line; it’s how we’ve structured things from the start. When you’re learning to handle a kite in North Sea conditions, individual attention matters. Our curriculum follows IKO methodology across four levels. Level 1 starts on the beach: kite control, steering, safety systems. Level 2 takes you into the water — body drag, downwind and upwind movement, relaunching from the water. Level 3 puts you on the board: water starts, first attempts at riding. Level 4 is advanced individual coaching for riders who are already up and riding but want to push further. Each level runs for 3 hours and costs €360, which includes all equipment — wetsuit, kite gear, harness, helmet, and impact vest. You walk away from the course with an official IKO kite licence, recognised internationally. Not sure if kitesurfing is for you? We offer a 90-minute taster session for €120. You stay on the beach, fly a trainer kite, and get a feel for the wind before committing to a full course. A lot of people start there.

The crew

Dirk founded Kite School Pro and leads the school as head instructor. He’s been kitesurfing for more than 20 years and competed at PKRA World Cup level as a pro rider. Every instructor on the team holds IKO certification, and several also carry VDWS credentials. Alex, our second head instructor, has been working in watersports for over ten years. We keep the team small enough that you’re never just a number on a booking system. People notice that, and the reviews reflect it.

Our accommodation

We’ve partnered with Campingplatz Mühlenhof to offer glamping accommodation on Sylt. The setup is fully equipped luxury tents with double beds, private terraces, and a small kitchen — comfortable enough to make a proper week of it without the Sylt hotel price tag. Availability and booking are handled directly through the campsite.

I stayed 10 days with Dirk in Sylt at Kiteschool Pro! The spots are very nice with sand, the weather wasn’t so cold as I was expecting. Dirk was very attentive to our needs, choosing the best spots, always with a good mood and humour. I had fun in a professional setting! The kites are Fone which are great for learning and the big one board is designed for an easy waterstart! The camper was very comfortable and the camping site where I stayed most likely the most luxurious experience I’ve had so far! Hope to be back soon!!! Thanks Dirk
