What you're in for

EA Kite Lagos has taught wingfoil & kitesurfing lessons in Lagos since 2018, choosing a lagoon setup that most schools in the Algarve don’t bother with. Our base is in Lagos town, but every lesson happens at the Ria de Alvor lagoon, a sheltered stretch of water between Lagos and Portimão on Portugal’s southern Algarve coast. It stays shallow enough to stand in for most of the tide, keeping open-water currents and beach chop out of the equation while you learn.

At a glance:

  • We are an IKO-certified school teaching at the Ria de Alvor lagoon, Lagos, Algarve
  • Kitesurfing lessons and wingfoil lessons for beginners through advanced riders
  • Private (1-on-1) and Semi-Private (2-on-1) lessons only, no big groups
  • Radio coaching used during sessions
  • Equipment: Slingshot and Naish kites, Mad Tuna and Slingshot boards (2026 fleet)
  • Wind: Nortada (NW thermal), April to September, peak June to August. Southerly winds and waves at Meia Praia October to March
  • All lessons run 3 hours and include full equipment
  • Full refund if a lesson is cancelled for weather
  • No-wind option: 2.0 cable wakeboard system

About our spot at Lagos

We don’t teach off a fixed beach. Every morning we check the wind and tide and pick the best possible corner of the Ria de Alvor lagoon for that day’s sessions, then drive the gear out in the school van. You’re welcome to follow in your own rental car if you have one, which gives you more freedom after the lesson finishes.

The lagoon sits between the Monchique mountains and the coast, and the water stays shallow and flat across most of it. At low tide you can stand in waist-deep water, reset your gear, and get feedback from your instructor without treading water the whole time. In winter, when the wind swings southerly, we move sessions to Meia Praia, the open beach in Lagos, where the same wind brings proper wave conditions for riders who want them.

Our kitesurfing season in Lagos

The wind that defines Lagos is the Nortada, a northwest thermal wind that builds through the Portuguese summer. It’s driven by heat rising off the land and cooler Atlantic air rushing in behind it, so on a clear, sunny day you can expect it to fill in somewhere between 2pm and 7pm. The geography between the Monchique mountains and the lagoon creates a venturi effect too, so the wind here often runs 3 to 5 knots stronger than the forecast suggests.

June through August is peak season, with the most consistent afternoon sessions. May and September are quieter shoulder months with fewer people in the lagoon and still-reliable wind. Most riders use 7m to 10m kites through summer, with a 12m worth packing for spring or autumn. From October to March the wind turns southerly, bringing warmer air and better waves down at Meia Praia. A 3/2mm shorty or full suit covers the summer, and we’d suggest a 4/3mm for winter or early spring sessions.

Our wingfoil & kitesurfing lessons we teach

We run Private and Semi-Private wingfoil & kitesurfing lessons only. No group classes of four or more. A Private lesson is one-on-one with your instructor for the full three hours. Semi-Private pairs two students with one instructor, so you still get well over double the kite time of a standard group class. Every lesson is 3 hours and includes all the gear you need. For a proper introduction, we also offer 3-day packages (9 hours total) at a reduced rate, in either format.

We teach wingfoil lessons at the same lagoon. The progression starts on the sand, learning to power and depower the wing in your hands. From there you move onto the water to sail across the wind on your knees or feet, then work on shifting your weight to lift the foil, and finally hold that balance to fly above the surface. We use high-volume boards for stability and short masts for beginners, so if you fall, the foil stays low in the water instead of breaching near the surface.

The crew

Our instructors are IKO-certified, and we use radio helmets during lessons so coaching happens in real time, without anyone needing to swim alongside you.

Our equipment

Lessons run on our 2026 Slingshot and Naish kite fleet, with custom boards from Mad Tuna and Slingshot. Everyone gets a wetsuit and safety gear as part of the lesson price. For independent riders who don’t need instruction, we also rent kites from 4m to 17m, twintip and strapless directional boards, and wingfoil wings, boards and foils by the day. Rental is reserved for self-sufficient riders who can hold an edge upwind and manage their own self-rescue. We’ll ask about your level and go through a spot briefing before you head out on your own.

No-wind activities

When the Nortada doesn’t show up, we run private sessions on our 2.0 cable wakeboard system. It’s a solid way to work on board control and edge control without needing any wind at all, and riders often use it to sharpen the same skills they need on the kite.

My boyfriend and I just completed a 4 day kitesurf course and loved it! Over the years we've gone through various sports courses and know how to differentiate great instructors from average ones. While there are tons of schools in the area it was important for us to find instructors with whom we could have a great time and that made us feel safe learning this new sport. Both Boris and Kes are outstanding instructors who had a lot of patience and a great sense of humour. They were focused on our indivual needs and really made sure that we were able to progress fast while feeling comfortable. They are the kind of guys who you can go kiting with all day and have a great conversation and share a drink with afterwards. After the course, my boyfriend even bought a whole set of equipment from Kes while receiving super knowledgeable recommendations and service. If you are looking to learn kitesurfing while you are in Lagos, look no futher. These are the guys to go with and they are handsdown some of the best instructors we ever met. We are looking forward to riding on our own now and are excited to hang out with Kes and Boris when we return to Lagos. Cheers guys!
