What you're in for

Kitesurfing Lanka runs wingfoil & kitesurfing lessons in Kalpitiya, one of the windiest stretches of coastline on Sri Lanka’s north-west. Our camp sits right on the lagoon and beachfront in Kalpitiya, on the Puttalam Peninsula, on the west coast of Sri Lanka. Two distinct kite seasons, a flat sheltered lagoon, and a location that mass tourism has so far left largely alone: that combination is what drew us here, and it’s what keeps people coming back.

At a glance:

  • We are an IKO-certified kite school in Kalpitiya, Sri Lanka
  • Kitesurfing lessons and wingfoil lessons for all levels, from complete beginners to advanced riders
  • All lessons include gear rental and transport to the kite spot
  • Equipment: Duotone kites (Dice / Evo / Rebel SLS), twin tips, surfboards, foil boards, wingfoil gear
  • Wind: two seasons — summer (May–October, 18–30 knots SW), winter (mid-December to mid-March, 12–20+ knots NW)
  • IKO-certified instructors teaching in French, English, Spanish, German, Italian, Russian, and Sinhalese
  • On-site accommodation: glamping tents, garden bungalows, lagoon-view premium bungalows, beach bungalows, 4-bedroom villa
  • All stays include full board, kite spot access and transport, gear storage, and camp facilities
  • On-site kite shop and kite repair

About our spot in Kalpitiya

Kalpitiya sits on a narrow peninsula jutting into the Puttalam Lagoon. For kitesurfing, this geography is hard to beat. On one side, you have the Indian Ocean. On the other is the lagoon: flat, shallow, and warm. Beginners learn in the lagoon, where the water rarely gets above waist depth at the start zone. Advanced riders head to the ocean side or out on kite trips along the peninsula’s edge, where small islets, sandbanks, and reefs change the picture every session.

The beach is uncrowded. Kalpitiya has not been swept up in mass tourism, and that keeps the kite spots honest. You share the water with other kite riders, not a hundred jet skis.

Our kitesurfing season in Kalpitiya

Kalpitiya has two kite seasons, so the camp runs almost year-round. The summer season runs from May to October, with southwest winds pushing through at 18–30 knots, often blowing all day. July and August are the most consistent months: usable wind almost every day, the kind of run that serious kite riders plan trips around. The winter season runs from mid-December to mid-March. The wind shifts to the northwest at 12–20+ knots, and January and February deliver the steadiest conditions of the season, well suited to progression riding and longer kite trips.

April and November are the slow months. Wind drops off and most kite riders time their trips to avoid them. The rest of the year, Kalpitiya delivers.

No wetsuit needed in either season. The Indian Ocean in front of the camp, the lagoon behind it, and the peninsula’s sandbanks and islets all offer different experiences depending on the wind direction. That variety is one of the things that makes this place worth staying at for more than a few days.

Wingfoil & kitesurfing lessons we offer

We started Kitesurfing Lanka because we love the sport. That’s not a marketing line. It’s the reason Dil and Leo, our founders, drove a beat-up Land Rover loaded with tents and borrowed furniture up to Kalpitiya to get the place started. Dilsiri Welikala is Sri Lanka’s first IKO-certified instructor, and everything we teach flows from that foundation.

Our IKO-certified instructors teach in seven languages, so language is rarely a barrier. All lessons follow IKO methodology and progression milestones. Students work through the wind window, kite piloting, body dragging, water starts, and riding. Reach IKO Level 3 and you walk away with your IKO card: the passport that lets you rent gear at any kite school worldwide.

Most students need 8-12 hours to get up and ride independently. A standard lesson day runs to about 3 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon. Private and group lessons are both available, and the package you choose depends on where you’re starting from.

We also offer kitefoil lessons and wingfoil lessons. Kalpitiya is a genuinely good place to learn wingfoiling: the flat lagoon and steady wind take the edge off the learning curve, and our instructors teach it with the same IKO structure as the kitesurfing programme. Most students get a real feel for the foil within four hours. Sessions run two hours as standard.

For experienced kite riders, we organise kite trips daily. The Mega Downwinder from Kalpitiya to Mannar is the signature one, covering serious distance along the peninsula’s edge. Several other trips run at different levels, so you can kite a different spot every day of the week.

Our equipment

We run Duotone gear: Dice, Evo, and Rebel SLS kites, a full range of twin tips, surfboards, and foil boards. Wingfoil equipment is also available. Everything is maintained and matched to the student’s level. There’s a kite shop and repair service on-site if anything needs sorting during your stay.

Our accommodation

The camp is a 10-acre property with lagoon and beachfront access. Gardens, palm trees, and an art collection that Dil has been building into the space over the years. Accommodation runs from glamping tents to garden bungalows, lagoon-view premium bungalows, beach bungalows, and a four-bedroom villa. All stays include full board.

The food is one of the things guests mention most. Local vegetables, fresh seafood from the morning fishermen, Sri Lankan classics like Rice & Curry, Hoppers, and Kottu alongside Western dishes. Tea, coffee, and drinking water available around the clock.

No-wind days

Sri Lanka is generous on this front. Whale-watching and dolphin-watching trips, visits to Anuradhapura and Sigiriya, elephant encounters, village excursions, and SUP on the lagoon all fill the gaps. Kalpitiya rewards the days the wind takes off too.

I’ve been to Sri Lanka a couple of times and wanted to try somewhere new and I was not disappointed. If you want great kite surfing, amazing location, tasty food and to feel like a part of a little family for a week then this is your spot. I stayed in the lagoon villa for 7 nights and definitely could have had another few days here. It was the first time I have kite surfed and got 11 hours of group sessions with Nils and loved it. I will definitely be coming back next season. Thanks KSL

Amazing kitesurfing spot and people ! I stayed in a premium bungalow which was very charming and comfortable. The food was very tasteful with lots of of choices. The kiting spots are amazing even though a bit gusty during the summer season (was there in May), and the staff helping us with the kites are wonderful ❤️ And the best was the atmosphere and the whole team working there : the organization is perfect, they are all so friendly, and welcoming, they are the best. I will come back 🙏

Had a great stay at Kitesurfing Lanka Resort! Perfect lagoon location, good rooms, and very friendly staff. Kitesurfing conditions were amazing, and the instructors were super helpful. Loved the extra activities like kayaking, dolphin watching, and biking. Yoga sessions by the beach were a highlight very relaxing. Overall a perfect mix of adventure and chill. Highly recommend.

Best place to stay in Kalpitiya and best for kitesurf. Dil and his team are so warm and welcoming. Many staff remain from the days it started more than a decade ago because they are taken care of. Sustainability is top of the agenda and you can really see the positive impact KSL has had on the society and the ecology in Kalpitiya.

Kitesurfing Lanka is very comfortable and well organized, almost like a small tourist gated community. The food is excellent, with three high-quality meals per day, and all activities are conveniently offered on-site. The place itself is cozy and many guests rarely feel the need to leave. At the same time, you can clearly feel that this is a highly commercial operation where the main focus is on an all-inclusive experience rather than local integration. If you enjoy comfort, structure, and a resort-style atmosphere, you will probably love it here. If you are more interested in connecting with local people and experiencing authentic Sri Lankan hospitality, I would recommend staying at a locally run place in the surrounding area instead.
